The diplomatic tensions between Canada and India have escalated, leading to the temporary suspension of in-person operations at the Consulates General of Canada in Bengaluru, Chandigarh, and Mumbai. Canadian citizens have been advised to seek consular assistance from the High Commission of Canada in New Delhi.
The decision comes after Canadian diplomats were threatened with the removal of their diplomatic immunity if they remained in India beyond a specified deadline. An advisory has been issued, warning Canadian citizens of potential protests and negative sentiment in India, especially in response to recent developments.
The advisory cautions against sharing personal information with strangers, avoiding crowded areas and public transportation, and traveling with a companion while keeping family or friends informed of travel plans. The tensions stem from the case of the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a figure considered a terrorist by India but not charged in Canada, which was further exacerbated by statements made by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. As a result, India has indefinitely stopped processing visas for Canadians.
