India chose to abstain from voting on the United Nations’ resolution regarding the Israel-Palestine conflict, citing concerns about the escalating violence and the October 7 attack, which it strongly condemned. While the UN resolution didn’t mention Hamas, India expressed support for Canada’s proposal to include a condemnation of the organization in the resolution.
During the Explanation of Vote, India’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Yojna Patel, emphasized the necessity of resolving disputes through dialogue and expressed deep concern over the violence, emphasizing its indiscriminate nature and the need for lasting solutions. Patel also stressed the importance of a unified, zero-tolerance approach to terrorism, urging the release of hostages and the display of responsibility by all parties involved in the conflict.
Furthermore, India reiterated its longstanding support for a negotiated two-state solution, advocating for the establishment of an independent and viable state of Palestine, living in peace alongside Israel within secure and recognized borders. India called for de-escalation, the rejection of violence, and the creation of conditions conducive to direct peace negotiations between the concerned parties.
