Air India Faces DGCA Scrutiny Over Passenger Rights Violation

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has recently taken action against Air India for allegedly not complying with the regulations outlined in the CAR Section 3, Series M part IV. This section focuses on the facilities that airlines are required to provide to passengers in cases of denied boarding, flight cancellations, and flight delays. The regulations were initially introduced in 2010 and have since undergone revisions to ensure the protection of air travelers during flight disruptions.

According to the statement accessed by ANI, the DGCA has been conducting regular inspections of scheduled domestic airlines at major airports since May 2023. During these inspections, it was observed that Air India was not adhering to the provisions outlined in the relevant CAR. Consequently, a show cause notice has been issued to Air India, asking the airline to provide a response regarding its failure to comply with the CAR’s provisions.

The statement further highlights that similar inspections were conducted at major airports in the previous year as well, during which Air India was found to be non-compliant with the CAR’s provisions on denied boarding of passengers. As a result of this non-compliance, Air India was previously penalized with a fine of ₹10,00,000/-.

This recent show cause notice underscores the significance of airlines adhering to the regulations set forth by the DGCA to ensure the protection and rights of air travelers, particularly in cases of denied boarding, flight cancellations, and flight delays.
