The Supreme Court has rejected telecom companies’ plea to re-compute adjusted gross revenues, or AGRs, amid a long-standing dispute over payment of dues to the government.
Vodafone India, Bharti Airtel, and other companies claimed a grave error by the Department of Telecommunications in the calculation of licence fees and spectrum charges payable to the union government, and also complained about the “arbitrary penalty” imposed by the court.
Telecom operators are required to pay these dues from their AGRs.
In October 2019 the top court directed them to pay Rs 92,000 crore within three months.
