The Sarai Kale Khan flyover in Delhi was inaugurated by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday, October 22. It is now open to the public.
The construction of the flyover, costing 57.7 crore, has extended the existing flyover, creating a continuous pathway from ITO to Sarai Kale Khan, Ashram, and other areas in Southeast Delhi.
The additional semi-flyover at Sarai Kale Khan spans 545 meters and includes three lanes, ramps, elevated sections, and a loop for U-turns. The upper ramp segment measures around 90 meters, the lower ramp stretches to 95 meters, and the overhead portion is 360 meters long. Previously, the site had a one-directional flyover for vehicles traveling from Ashram to ITO, and the new flyover is similar to the preexisting structure.
The buses stopping near the ISBT on the main road currently cause road congestion. With the new flyover, travelers going towards South Delhi and the DND Flyway from ITO can now take a direct route. A senior PWD officer stated that “during rush hours, heavy traffic causes 10-15 minute hold-ups, but now it is considerably reduced due to the new flyover.”
According to government assessments, the construction of the flyover results in a daily reduction of 5 tons of CO2 emissions and saves Rs 19 crore annually.
