In the consequences of the Silkyara tunnel collapse in Uttarakhand on November 12, a significant development has been achieved in the ongoing rescue efforts to free 41 trapped workers. The rescue operation, which had been temporarily paused ,on November 19, for strategic planning, resumed with multiple approaches.

The Theri Hydroelectric Development Corporation planned to initiate ‘micro tunnelling’ from the Barkot end on the Char Dham route. However, on November 17, an American-made heavy-duty auger machine faced an obstacle, causing a temporary halt in the boring process through the collapsed debris from the Silkyara end.

The alternative rescue plans was rapidly taken into consideration a road to the hilltop was constructed to dig a vertical shaft into the tunnel. Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari expressed optimism, anticipating a breakthrough within two and a half days.

The tunnel, spanning two kilometers with a height of 8.5 meters and equipped with water and electricity, presented unique challenges. A 6-inch wide tube was successfully pushed 39 meters deep into the rubble.This tube serves as a lifeline, enabling authorities to send food and water to the trapped workers.

In a major development, a six-inch pipe has been installed into the debris, allowing for improved communication and the delivery of solid food items. Anshu Mansish Khalkho, director of NHIDCL, shared the positive news, stating that this breakthrough was a top priority.

The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) and the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) played crucial roles in the rescue operation. DRDO introduced robots weighing 20 kg and 50 kg to navigate the challenging terrain.

Uttarkashi district magistrate Abhishek Ruhela provided reassurance that the rescue operation is in an advanced stage. With roads constructed and machinery on standby, the authorities are continuously working to ensure a swift and safe extraction of the trapped workers.

The Authorities have released the first video footage of the workers stuck inside the Silkyara tunnel for the past ten days. The visuals showcase the trapped laborers wearing a safety gear, engaging in conversation, and they received food items sent to them.

The camera  placed inside, captures the the workers as they communicate with each other. In a reassuring moment, the rescuers asked one of the trapped labourers to pick up the camera and communicate that ,“Are you okay? If everybody is well, then show yourself in the camera raise a hand and smile. We will reach out to you soon, don’t get anxious, take out the camera slowly and show everybody,” an official was heard saying in a video. As the rescue efforts intensify, this video offers a glimmer of hope, highlights the dedication of the rescue teams to ensure the safety and well-being of those inside the Silkyara tunnel.
