Saskatchewan Roughriders receiver KeeSean Johnson strengthened his partnership with quarterback Trevor Harris during the club’s late-season run in 2024. A contested touchdown catch against Edmonton supplied the winning points in a 28–24 victory that secured Saskatchewan a playoff berth.
A decisive catch against the Elks
Johnson went above a defender to secure Harris’s pass in the end zone. He said the most meaningful part was his quarterback’s confidence to give him a chance on a play the team needed.
A highlight catch can dominate a recap, but its value came from situation as well as difficulty. The score held up as the difference in a four-point game and extended the Roughriders’ winning streak to three.
Chemistry developed after Harris returned
Harris had missed time with a knee injury before returning in August. Over the next seven games, Johnson caught five touchdown passes, showing that their timing developed quickly despite the interrupted season.
Harris praised Johnson’s routes, body language, hands and ability to adjust to the ball. For a quarterback, those traits make the receiver’s likely position more predictable before and after a pass is released.
Trust on a contested throw is not permission to force the ball indiscriminately. The quarterback must still read coverage and pressure, while the receiver must protect possession and prevent a defender from gaining a clean interception opportunity.
Production supported the visual impression
Johnson accumulated 294 receiving yards during the three-game winning streak. Entering the next matchup with the B.C. Lions, another 100-yard performance would have been his third in succession.
Yardage alone does not describe a receiver’s full contribution. First downs, blocking, route spacing, attention drawn from safeties and performance on high-leverage downs can all influence an offence.
The newcomer’s background
Johnson arrived in Saskatchewan after playing college football at Fresno State and spending time in the National Football League. The Arizona Cardinals selected him in the sixth round of the 2019 draft.
Changing leagues requires adjustment to the CFL’s wider field, pre-snap motion, roster rules and defensive spacing. A steady role depends on learning the offence and becoming reliable across ordinary plays, not only producing a weekly highlight.
A playoff berth was a milestone, not the objective
The Edmonton win guaranteed Saskatchewan postseason football after the club had missed the playoffs in 2023. It did not determine seeding or remove the need to improve before elimination games.
Late-season momentum can help confidence, but a short winning streak is not automatically predictive. Opponent quality, injuries, turnovers and field position can change from one week to the next.
Why “steady” was the right description
Johnson’s touchdown displayed athleticism, while the surrounding seven-game pattern showed repeatable value. Harris could throw with anticipation because the receiver ran routes consistently and competed for the ball.
The pairing also illustrated how quarterback health affects evaluation. Johnson’s rise after Harris returned did not mean earlier receivers or quarterbacks lacked ability; a stable passing relationship creates opportunities that an injury-disrupted offence may not reproduce.
By October, Saskatchewan had evidence of both: a spectacular play when the season demanded it and several weeks of dependable production. That combination explained why Johnson’s contribution mattered more than one catch circulating in a highlight reel.
