Harvey Barnes scored twice as a second-half substitute to give Newcastle United a 3-2 victory over West Bromwich Albion and a place in the third round of the Carabao Cup.
The tie at St James’ Park twice appeared capable of slipping away from Newcastle. Isaac Price put West Brom ahead with a 19th-minute free-kick and later equalised from the penalty spot, but Barnes produced the decisive response four minutes after the second goal.
How the five goals were scored
West Brom took the lead when Price bent a long-range free-kick around the wall and past debutant goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen. Newcastle recovered in the 38th minute through Bazoumana Toure, who converted an Amar Dedic delivery for a goal on his own competitive debut.
Barnes replaced Toure at half-time and needed only three minutes to score. His first effort from the aftermath of a corner was blocked, but he reacted quickly and drove the second chance home from close range.
The advantage lasted until the 77th minute, when Lewis Hall was penalised for handball and Price converted the penalty for his second goal. Extra time seemed possible until Dedic delivered another low cross and Barnes swept in Newcastle’s winner in the 81st minute.
Barnes changes the match
The winger’s impact was particularly notable because he previously spent time on loan at West Brom. Introduced to add direct running and finishing from the left, he converted two of Newcastle’s most important second-half openings and prevented a difficult cup night from becoming an upset.
Dedic was central to the comeback as well. The right-back supplied the delivery for Toure’s equaliser and the cross for the winner, giving Newcastle attacking width against a West Brom defence that had competed strongly through the centre.
First competitive win for Matthias Jaissle
The result delivered Matthias Jaissle’s first competitive victory as Newcastle head coach. His team had been held by Liverpool in the league and faced renewed pressure after falling behind to a Championship opponent, but the substitutions altered the pace of the match.
Newcastle also presented midfielder Nico Gonzalez to the crowd before kick-off following his move from Manchester City. Several newer players then received significant minutes, allowing the club to progress while testing squad depth early in the season.
What the result means
Newcastle advance to the Carabao Cup third round, where the draw paired them with Millwall. The competition has particular significance for the club after its recent cup success, but the West Brom match also exposed defensive moments that stronger opponents could punish.
For West Brom, Price’s two goals and the side’s ability to recover at 2-1 demonstrated why the tie remained competitive until the final whistle. The difference was Barnes’ finishing and Newcastle’s greater attacking depth from the bench.
