Spotify notified Canadian Premium subscribers in October 2024 that monthly prices would rise beginning with their December billing dates. The increase applied across individual, student, Duo and Family plans, so the amount depended on the subscription rather than one universal fee.
The announced Canadian prices
The individual Premium plan increased from $10.99 to $12.69 per month before applicable tax. The student plan moved from $5.99 to $6.39, while Duo rose from $14.99 to $17.89.
The Family plan recorded the largest dollar increase, from $16.99 to $20.99 per month. Spotify said eligible new customers could still receive a one-month trial under the offer shown at the time.
These were the prices announced for December 2024, not a promise that the figures would remain current indefinitely. Anyone making a decision later should check Spotify’s live Canadian plan page and the notice attached to the account.
When the change took effect
Existing subscribers were told the new charge would begin on their regular billing date in December. That meant customers could see different transaction dates even though the policy changed in the same month.
People billed through Apple, Google, a telecommunications company or another partner could have different account-management steps. The subscription page should identify the billing provider and the place where cancellation or plan changes must be made.
Spotify’s explanation
The company said the increase would support continued innovation in products and features. Canada’s previous Premium increase had occurred in July 2023, and Spotify had raised U.S. prices earlier in 2024.
That explanation described the company’s position; it did not itemize how each additional dollar would be spent or guarantee a particular new feature. Subscribers could reasonably evaluate the service by the catalogue, audio experience, discovery tools, device support and price actually available to them.
Comparing the plans
Duo and Family plans are not simply discounted bundles for unrelated people. Eligibility rules generally require members to live at the same address, and the account holder is responsible for inviting or removing members and paying the bill.
The student rate requires periodic verification through Spotify’s approved process and is available only for a limited eligibility period. A customer who no longer qualifies may be moved to another plan at its then-current price.
Before switching, users should compare the full annual cost after tax, the number of eligible members and whether another plan duplicates a service included with a phone, internet or device package.
Cancellation and account safety
Spotify said members could change plans or cancel. Cancellation normally converts the account to the advertising-supported tier after the paid period ends, preserving playlists and saved music while removing Premium benefits.
A legitimate price notice should direct the customer to the official account page. Unexpected emails asking for a password, payment card or urgent login deserve caution; users can navigate directly to Spotify rather than following an unfamiliar link.
Deleting the application does not cancel a subscription. The billing record should confirm that a cancellation or plan change was completed.
What the increase meant
For an individual subscriber, the announced increase was $1.70 per month before tax, or $20.40 over a full year. Duo rose by $2.90 monthly and Family by $4, making household eligibility and actual use more important to the comparison.
The 2024 change was a straightforward subscription decision rather than a loss of access to purchased music: Premium provides ongoing access while payments continue. The practical response was to verify the plan, billing channel and renewal date, then keep, change or cancel it based on the current value—not assume that a two-year-old quoted price still applies.
