A delegation of Congress leaders, including notable figures such as AICC general secretary Jairam Ramesh, party leader Salman Khurshid, and others, met the Chief Election Commissioner and other election commissioners. They presented eight memorandums highlighting alleged violations of the model code of conduct during election campaigns in Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and Telangana. The complaints included accusations against Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for making inflammatory statements.
The Congress alleged that Amit Shah’s speech in Chhattisgarh’s Rajnandgaon on October 16 contained remarks that violated the Indian Penal Code and the Representation of the People Act, 1951. Similarly, they accused Himanta Biswa Sarma of making provocative comments during a speech in Kawardha, Chhattisgarh. These statements were seen as attempts to incite social divisions.
The party also lodged a complaint against the central government, alleging the politicization of civil servants and Indian Army soldiers through directives promoting the achievements of the BJP administration. According to the Congress, such actions violated the model code of conduct and the Central Civil Services (Conduct) Rules, 1964.
Furthermore, the Congress submitted a complaint against Govind Singh Rajput, a BJP candidate from Surkhi, Sagar district in Madhya Pradesh, seeking his disqualification for reportedly promising incentives to those managing booths where a maximum number of votes were cast for the BJP.
Additionally, the Congress expressed concerns about the premature transfer of police officers in Telangana and the assignment of election duties to officers openly supporting a specific political party. They highlighted their continuous efforts in exposing and documenting electoral malpractices, emphasizing the need for the Election Commission to take necessary actions to address these issues and ensure fair and transparent elections.
Former Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) chief Revanth Reddy underscored what he saw as a rise in corruption during elections in Telangana and called on the Election Commission to intervene strongly to ensure the conduct of transparent and fair elections.
