The Unique Identification Authority of India extended the period for Aadhaar holders to upload proof-of-identity and proof-of-address documents online without paying the usual document-update fee until December 14, 2024.
That date was the deadline announced when this article was first published. It is no longer current: UIDAI subsequently extended the free online document-update facility, and its current public guidance says the relaxation runs through June 14, 2027. Users should verify the date on the official myAadhaar portal before beginning a request.
What “free Aadhaar update” actually covered
The waiver applied to the online document-update service on myAadhaar. It allowed a resident to submit identity and address documents so the information supporting an existing Aadhaar record remained current. It did not mean that every demographic or biometric change was free through every channel.
Name, date-of-birth, mobile, photograph, fingerprint or iris changes may require a different service, supporting documents and a visit to an Aadhaar enrolment or update centre. Charges at a centre are service fees prescribed by UIDAI; they are not a penalty or “fine” for missing the free-online deadline.
Why UIDAI asks residents to keep documents current
Accurate supporting information can reduce mismatches when Aadhaar is used for identity verification. UIDAI has particularly encouraged people whose Aadhaar was issued more than ten years ago and has not since been updated to review their details. Uploading documents does not change a correct name or address by itself; a separate demographic update may be needed if the displayed information is wrong.
Aadhaar is an identity system, not proof of citizenship. Updating it should not be described as renewing citizenship status or paying a tax. Residents should rely on UIDAI terminology because misleading messages about compulsory payments are often used in phishing attempts.
How to use the official service
A resident can sign in at myAadhaar using the Aadhaar number and a one-time password sent to the registered mobile number, choose the document-update service, check the displayed details and upload acceptable documents. The files should be clear, current and match the information in the record.
After submission, the user should save the service-request number and monitor status on the official site. If the registered mobile is unavailable or a demographic or biometric change is required, the appropriate step may be an authorised centre rather than repeated online attempts.
Privacy and fraud precautions
Documents can contain more information than a recipient needs. Users should upload them only through an official uidai.gov.in or myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in page, avoid public computers and never disclose an OTP to an unsolicited caller. UIDAI does not need remote access to a phone to complete a document update.
An old article or forwarded message can display a genuine historical deadline while still giving outdated advice. The safest check is the fee, eligible transaction and validity period shown inside the current official service immediately before submission, especially after an extension has been announced.
