Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad wants to be UP’s Vijay, plans statewide march to expand base

Nagina MP Chandrashekhar Azad planned to begin a “Satta Parivartan” journey across all 75 districts of Uttar Pradesh on June 4, 2026. Leaders of his Aazad Samaj Party (Kanshi Ram) described the statewide tour as an effort to energise workers and establish the party as an alternative before the 2027 Assembly election.

A strategy inspired by another state

Party figures compared the plan with actor-politician C. Joseph Vijay’s campaign in Tamil Nadu, where his Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam had just won power. The comparison was about political method and ambition rather than identical conditions. Uttar Pradesh has a much larger electorate, different alliances and a long-established contest among the Bharatiya Janata Party, Samajwadi Party, Bahujan Samaj Party and Congress.

Azad founded the Bhim Army as a social organization focused on Dalit rights and education before building the ASP(KR). His victory from Nagina in the 2024 Lok Sabha election gave the party a parliamentary platform. A single constituency win, however, does not automatically create booth-level organization across an entire state.

What a 75-district march can accomplish

A statewide tour can recruit local leaders, test messages and identify where an organization has active workers rather than only online recognition. Meetings allow voters to raise district-specific concerns about employment, schools, policing, caste violence, land and public services. The route and attendance can also reveal whether the party’s support extends beyond its strongest western Uttar Pradesh pockets.

For the exercise to become more than a personality campaign, the party would need public district coordinators, transparent finances and a process for selecting candidates. It would also have to translate grievances into a costed state programme and show how elected representatives would be held accountable.

The competition for Bahujan votes

Azad’s rise places him in direct competition with the BSP, historically the state’s largest Dalit-led party, while the Samajwadi Party and Congress also seek support from Dalits, other backward classes and minorities. These communities are not a single voting bloc. Preferences vary by caste, region, age, local candidate and the perceived ability of a party to form a government.

Invoking Vijay may help communicate the possibility of a newer party displacing established rivals. It can also invite scrutiny. A successful campaign in Tamil Nadu cannot simply be copied into Uttar Pradesh, and celebrity appeal differs from Azad’s activist and parliamentary profile.

Alliance choices will matter

A smaller party can contest widely to build an independent identity or negotiate an alliance to concentrate votes. Each route carries costs. Going alone may demonstrate strength but split opposition votes; joining a larger formation can improve electoral arithmetic while limiting seats and message control.

Reports about the proposed march did not settle the ASP(KR)’s alliance strategy or final candidate map. Until formal announcements are made, discussions and private claims should not be reported as completed agreements.

How to judge the campaign

Crowd size is an imperfect measure because rallies can draw supporters from outside a constituency. More useful indicators include durable local committees, verified membership, issue-based work between events, credible candidates and vote share in subsequent elections. Media attention to Azad personally should not be confused with organizational reach.

The planned journey was a significant attempt to expand a Dalit-led party throughout India’s most populous state. Its impact would depend on whether Azad could convert visibility and his Nagina mandate into broad, sustained organization while offering voters a programme more specific than the promise of political change.
