WebQoof Recap: Of Misinformation Around Cockroach Janta Party, SRK & More

Five viral claims involving the Cockroach Janta Party, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, content creator Dhruv Rathee, actor Shah Rukh Khan and a West Bengal cattle-trade video were checked during the week ending May 29, 2026. Each relied on altered, synthetic or out-of-context media.

Deepfake attributed a demand to Jaishankar

A manipulated press-conference video appeared to show Jaishankar asking the United States to hand over the CJP founder. No credible speech, transcript or official statement supported the purported demand. Comparison with the original footage and signs of synthetic alteration showed that the circulating version was a deepfake.

The absence of a statement alone is not always decisive, but a major diplomatic demand would normally leave several independent records. When only one edited clip supplies the claim, locating the complete press event is more reliable than judging lip movement in a compressed repost.

Old Durgapur video was attached to a new government

Another post described footage of Muslim cattle traders being heckled in Durgapur as a recent event under West Bengal’s newly elected BJP government. The location and underlying confrontation were real, but the video dated to July 2025, before that government took office.

This makes the caption partly false and politically misleading. A correct location cannot rescue an incorrect date when the post’s purpose is to assign responsibility to officials who were not in power at the time.

Vijay clip was unrelated to the current crime

Video of Tamil Nadu chief minister Vijay leaving without answering questions was linked to outrage over the sexual assault and murder of a minor in Coimbatore. The footage actually showed him at the state secretariat in March 2026 and was not evidence of his response to the later case.

Officials can legitimately be questioned about women’s safety, but criticism should use their actual statements and actions. Re-dating footage manufactures a reaction that did not occur in the claimed setting.

Dhruv Rathee video was repurposed

An altered clip suggested Rathee had accused the CJP of buying followers. The original discussion concerned Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha. Edited names, subtitles or audio can redirect a familiar speaker’s authority toward an unrelated target.

Viewers should find the complete upload on the creator’s verified channel and compare the sentences before and after the viral segment. Cropping can be misleading even when no generative AI is used.

Shah Rukh Khan did not announce support

A clip purporting to carry Khan’s praise for the CJP used AI-generated audio over visuals from August 2023, before the group existed. The timeline independently disproved the claimed event, while audio analysis explained how the fabrication was made.

Celebrity endorsements affect political perception and can spread faster than corrections. A verified account, official representative and multiple reputable reports should confirm any consequential endorsement before it is repeated.

The common manipulation pattern

All five claims borrowed authentic-looking visual material and changed one decisive element: voice, subject, date or context. Effective verification therefore combines reverse search, earliest-upload tracing, full-video comparison, official records and chronology. AI-detection tools can assist but should not be the sole basis for a verdict.

Each finding is limited to the media examined. Debunking a clip does not validate or invalidate the underlying parties, policies or grievances. It restores the evidentiary boundary so those debates can proceed without manufactured proof.
