Google launches Gemini 3.8 Flash and a restricted cyber model: what is actually new
Google has released Gemini 3.8 Flash as a general-purpose model and introduced Gemini 3.8 Flash Cyber, a security-specialised version that will initially be available only to vetted defenders through a programme called Fairwind.
The standard model’s introductory API price is $0.75 per million input tokens and $3.75 per million output tokens through December 31, 2026. Google says those prices will double afterward. Developers therefore need to compare total task cost, latency and accuracy rather than treating the launch rate as permanent.
What the cyber model is designed to do
Flash Cyber is intended for authorised vulnerability analysis, patch generation and defensive investigation. Google reports that it generated 2.6 times more correct Chrome patches than the strongest much larger commercial model in an internal comparison. On the public CWE-Bench benchmark, Google reports a 47.2% pass-at-one result, close to the 47.8% score it lists for the leading model.
Those figures are vendor-reported evaluations, not a guarantee that the system will find or repair vulnerabilities in every codebase. Secure deployment still requires tests, code review, limited credentials and a rollback path.
Why access is restricted
Google says Fairwind applicants must represent legitimate internal security teams or comparable defensive organisations, use multi-factor authentication and accept monitoring and use restrictions. That matters because a model capable of speeding up defensive research may also lower the effort needed to misuse security knowledge.
The Gemini 3.8 Flash model card also records familiar limitations: inaccurate statements, uneven knowledge, slow responses on some prompts and performance differences across languages and domains. A high benchmark score does not remove the need to verify generated code and factual answers.
