IMD warns of heavy rain in Delhi region and prolonged rain in sub-Himalayan Bengal and Sikkim
The India Meteorological Department has issued heavy-rain warnings for Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi through September 5, while sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim face a longer run of heavy-rain alerts.
The subdivision pages were issued on September 3. They describe forecast categories over broad areas; they do not mean every neighbourhood will receive the same rainfall.
West Bengal and Sikkim outlook
IMD lists very heavy rain for sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on September 3, along with thunderstorms, lightning and squalls. Heavy rain remains in the subdivision forecast from September 4 through September 9. Gangetic West Bengal has a thunderstorm warning on September 3 and heavy-rain alerts for September 8 and 9.
Delhi, Haryana and Chandigarh
The Delhi/NCR subdivision page lists heavy rain on September 3, 4 and 5, followed by no subdivision-wide warning from September 6 through 9. District nowcasts and local forecasts can still change within that period.
Practical precautions
Intense rain can create urban waterlogging, traffic disruption, landslides in steep terrain and fast rises in small streams. People should avoid flooded underpasses and low crossings, keep away from unstable slopes and follow district disaster-management and IMD nowcast updates.
Lightning can occur beyond the heaviest rain core. Move into a substantial building or enclosed vehicle when thunder is heard; isolated trees and open fields are unsafe shelters.
