MANCHESTER, August 31 — Bruno Fernandes scored a hat-trick and supplied an assist as Manchester United recovered from a goal down to beat Ipswich Town 5–2 at Old Trafford on Sunday. United’s first Premier League victory of the season came after the visitors had threatened to turn the afternoon into another setback.
Leif Davis put Ipswich ahead in the 29th minute. Fernandes equalised before the interval, and a burst of second-half goals changed the shape of the contest.
The scoring sequence
- 29 minutes: Davis finished from Abdul Fatawu’s delivery to give Ipswich the lead.
- 40 minutes: Fernandes equalised after Marcelino Nunez’s slip allowed United to break through.
- 56 minutes: A Jacob Greaves own goal put United ahead.
- 61 minutes: Fernandes converted a penalty after Greaves fouled Matheus Cunha.
- 68 minutes: Fernandes completed his hat-trick.
- Late in the second half: Bryan Mbeumo made it five for United.
- Stoppage time: Chuba Akpom scored Ipswich’s second.
Why the turnaround was decisive
The match was level at half-time, but Ipswich’s position deteriorated rapidly after the restart. Greaves diverted Harry Maguire’s effort into his own net and then conceded the penalty, leaving the visitors chasing a two-goal deficit instead of defending a point.
Fernandes completed the treble when a deflected Mbeumo effort reached him. He subsequently returned the favour by creating Mbeumo’s goal, finishing with direct involvement in four of United’s five.
It was Fernandes’s second Premier League hat-trick. His previous one also came in United’s first home league match of a season, against Leeds in 2021–22.
What the result does—and does not—show
United’s attacking response was emphatic, but Ipswich had exposed space earlier in the game. Senne Lammens made an important save against Julio Enciso before Davis scored, while Akpom’s late goal ensured the visitors did not leave without another response.
The afternoon offered evidence of United’s ability to punish mistakes and sustain an attacking surge. It also left defensive moments to review. A five-goal home win changes the immediate mood; it is not, by itself, a verdict on the entire campaign.
