September Android Drop: five new features and compatible Android versions

Google’s September 2026 Android Drop introduces five features spanning Gemini, Find Hub, accessibility and Google Messages. They are not all part of one conventional operating-system update, and they do not share a single compatibility requirement.

Some functions are available now through updated Google applications, while others are described as rolling out or coming soon. That means two phones running the same Android version may receive a feature at different times depending on country, account, app version and manufacturer support.

1. Gemini can remember where items were placed

Google says users will soon be able to tell Gemini where they stored an item and save that location in Find Hub. A person could record the location of a passport or spare key, optionally attach a photograph and later ask Gemini where it was placed. Google lists Android 16 or later and countries where both Gemini and Find Hub are supported.

This is intended for objects without a tracking tag. It records information supplied by the user; it does not physically locate an untagged object after it has moved.

2. Motion Assist for passengers

Motion Assist adds moving bubbles over the screen to reduce the conflict between visible screen content and vehicle movement that can contribute to motion sickness. It can be placed in Quick Settings, activated automatically and customised for shape, colour and opacity. Google limits the feature to phones running Android 17.

It is designed for passengers. A phone feature does not make reading or watching video safe while driving.

3. Guided vision in Gemini Live

Guided vision can describe what a phone camera sees and give spoken guidance when the camera needs to be reframed. Google says it was designed with blind and low-vision communities and can help with tasks such as reading fine print or identifying household objects.

The feature is coming soon to phones running Android 9 or later in countries where Gemini is available. Google explicitly warns that Guided vision can make mistakes and is not a medical device, mobility aid or substitute for safe-travel guidance. It should not be used for navigation or obstacle detection.

4. Collaborative Keep notes inside Messages

Google Messages is beginning to integrate Google Keep through its plus menu. Participants can create and edit shared lists or notes without leaving a conversation. The rollout began on September 1, but server-side deployment may make it appear gradually.

5. Custom chat themes

Messages users can assign individual chats a background and matching bubble colours, using a preset wallpaper or personal photograph. Google describes Chat theme as available now, although app updates and account rollout can still affect visibility.

Why the version numbers matter

The Drop combines platform-level and app-delivered changes. Motion Assist requires Android 17, the Find Hub memory function requires Android 16 or later, while Guided vision reaches much older Android 9 devices. Users should update Google Messages, Gemini, Find Hub and system components through trusted update channels and then check the relevant app settings.
