Good morning,
Indians have lost nearly Rs 3,000 crore to the rising menace of ‘digital arrests’ in recent years. For those unfamiliar with the scam, digital arrests involve fraudsters impersonating law enforcement officials via video calls and falsely claiming that the victims are being investigated for serious crimes. Using a sense of urgency and fear, the scamsters coerce victims to transfer large sums to avoid arrest. Now, an interdepartmental panel of the Ministry of Home Affairs is mulling measures to curb the crime, including a “kill switch” that would allow users to freeze all bank transactions immediately if they suspect they are being defrauded. An insurance mechanism to cover fraud-related losses is also under consideration. Soumyarendra Barik and George Mathew bring you more details.
