Meloni government becomes the longest continuously serving postwar Italian cabinet
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s government has become Italy’s longest continuously serving cabinet since the Second World War, reaching 1,413 uninterrupted days in office on September 3.
The milestone passes the 1,412-day record of Silvio Berlusconi’s second government. It measures the duration of one unchanged cabinet, not the total time a politician or party has governed Italy.
Why the record stands out
Postwar Italy has been known for frequent government changes, often involving new coalitions or prime ministers without an immediate general election. Meloni’s right-wing coalition took office in October 2022 and has avoided the internal break that ended many predecessors.
Meloni is Italy’s first woman prime minister. Her government says it intends to complete the parliamentary term, expected to run until 2027. Reaching that date would be politically significant, although the longevity record alone says nothing about the popularity or effectiveness of individual policies.
Stability does not end political pressure
The coalition still faces arguments over economic growth, migration, public finances, relations with the European Union and foreign policy. Italy’s constitution and parliamentary system also allow a government to lose support before a scheduled election.
A useful way to read the milestone is narrow but meaningful: the same Meloni cabinet has remained in office longer without interruption than any other Italian cabinet in the postwar era. Broader claims about democratic stability or policy performance require separate evidence.
