Edmonton Elks interim head coach Jarious Jackson named McLeod Bethel-Thompson the starting quarterback for a September 27, 2024 rematch in Winnipeg. The move returned the veteran to the lineup after Canadian quarterback Tre Ford started the previous loss to the Blue Bombers.
Edmonton changed starters after one game
Ford had returned from injury for the first meeting, completing 10 of 17 passes for 131 yards with two interceptions and a lost fumble. Bethel-Thompson replaced him during the fourth quarter of the 27–14 defeat.
Jackson said after practice that Bethel-Thompson would take the next start, making the decision official rather than speculative.
The rematch carried playoff consequences
Winnipeg entered Week 17 able to clinch a playoff berth with a victory. Edmonton, at 5–9, had little room for another loss after recovering from an extremely poor beginning to its season.
A home-and-home schedule gives coaches immediate evidence about matchups but also gives the opponent time to prepare a countermeasure.
Bethel-Thompson offered experience
The veteran had played in pressure games and was comfortable delivering from the pocket. Edmonton expected his recognition and timing to stabilize an offence facing a disciplined Winnipeg defence.
Experience could not solve protection breakdowns, penalties or field position by itself; quarterback evaluation required the performance of the whole unit.
Ford offered a different threat
Ford’s speed and improvisation could stretch a defence horizontally and punish man coverage. Supporters saw him as a potential long-term starter and questioned whether a rapid switch allowed enough development time.
The coaching staff had to balance that future consideration against the immediate need to remain in contention.
Ball security was the priority
The previous game’s turnovers limited Edmonton’s opportunities and created pressure on its defence. Against Winnipeg, the Elks needed manageable second downs and fewer short fields regardless of who played quarterback.
Explosive throws matter, but avoiding negative possessions is often more decisive in a close divisional game.
The result did not validate every assumption
Winnipeg won the rematch 55–27 and clinched a playoff place. Bethel-Thompson completed 19 of 34 attempts for 223 yards and three touchdowns, production that coexisted with a one-sided team defeat.
A quarterback can make scoring plays while the overall game moves beyond reach because football outcomes combine offence, defence and special teams.
Edmonton’s season remained a transition
The Elks improved on their 2023 record but eventually missed the playoffs for a fourth consecutive year. Repeated starter changes illustrated uncertainty about how best to combine short-term performance with roster development.
Coaches also had to maintain trust in both players when only one could begin a given game.
The announcement was a tactical decision
Bethel-Thompson’s start was not a permanent verdict on Ford’s ability. It reflected an interim coach’s response to the previous loss and a specific opponent during a narrowing playoff race.
The subsequent score showed that changing one position could not reverse every matchup. Meaningful assessment required protection quality, decision-making, drive efficiency and the defence’s ability to keep the contest competitive.
Those indicators provided more useful evidence for future selections than the starter’s name alone.
