British Columbia Conservative candidate Korky Neufeld won Abbotsford West in the October 19, 2024, provincial election. Elections BC’s final statement recorded 11,483 votes for Neufeld, or 58.35 per cent of valid ballots.
The final vote was decisive
BC New Democratic Party candidate Graeme Hutchison received 7,255 votes, or 36.87 per cent. Independent candidate James Davison received 940 votes, or 4.78 per cent.
Neufeld’s margin over Hutchison was 4,228 votes. The result was not among the province’s close recount contests and therefore did not determine the final majority through a handful of ballots.
Turnout exceeded half of registered voters
Elections BC recorded 19,678 valid votes and 47 rejected ballots, for 19,725 ballots considered in the district. With 37,833 registered voters, turnout was 52.14 per cent. Publishing each component makes the turnout calculation independently checkable.
A rejected ballot is not automatically evidence of confusion or protest; election officials apply statutory validity rules. Reporting the number alongside valid votes provides a complete result without guessing voter intent.
The Conservatives consolidated the centre-right vote
The modern BC Conservative Party rose dramatically in 2024 after years outside the legislature’s main competition. The former BC Liberal coalition had rebranded as BC United and withdrew its province-wide campaign before election day.
Local results cannot be attributed to one factor alone, but Abbotsford West’s majority fit the Conservatives’ strong performance in the Fraser Valley. Party label, candidates and regional concerns all contributed.
A riding result is more than a projection
On election night, media organizations may “call” a seat using partial returns and statistical judgment. The legal result comes from Elections BC’s count, including eligible mail, absentee and special ballots.

The provincial outcome was much closer
Across British Columbia, the NDP ultimately won 47 seats, the Conservatives 44 and the Greens two. The final NDP majority depended on close counts elsewhere, particularly Surrey-Guildford.
Neufeld therefore entered the legislature as an opposition MLA even though he won his district comfortably. A local majority and a party’s province-wide governing status are separate results.
What the MLA became responsible for
An MLA represents constituents in the legislature, considers bills and spending, participates in committees and helps residents navigate provincial services. Party discipline is strong, but the constituency includes people who voted for other candidates or did not vote.
Coverage after election day should move beyond the horse race to attendance, voting record, constituency access, expenses and policy work.
Numbers make the result auditable
Election reporting is unusually verifiable because the administrator publishes poll-level and district-level counts. Correct totals, percentages, turnout and candidate names matter more than promotional descriptions of victory.
Abbotsford West chose Korky Neufeld by a clear margin: 11,483 votes to Hutchison’s 7,255 and Davison’s 940. That concise result should anchor any later interpretation of why the riding voted as it did and how effectively its elected representative served it.
