Six Quebec residents who had mostly never met shared the winning ticket in the October 9, 2024 Lotto 6/49 Gold Ball draw. Five group shares had been sold through a Saint-Clet gas station, dividing the $32-million jackpot into portions worth $6.4 million each.
How strangers owned one ticket
Loto-Québec’s Formule Groupe lets customers buy a share in a group entry without organizing the group themselves. Depending on the offer, a ticket can be divided into two to 20 shares and the lottery system records the interest attached to each purchase.
In this draw, six people held the five shares because one couple divided a share between them. They gathered at Loto-Québec’s Montreal office on October 16 and met as a group for the first time.
The winners
Lyne Beaulieu and Alain Dupuis were the final participants to buy into the group. Other winners included delivery driver Benoit Laberge, Montreal resident Marie-Josée Roy, Louise Lanthier and retired accountant Jeanne Bouchard Pharand.
Most lived in the Montérégie region. Roy encountered the Saint-Clet retailer while travelling to horseback-riding lessons, showing how a point-of-sale group can connect buyers who have no personal relationship.
Plans changed quickly
Dupuis said he and his partner intended to work two more weeks, retire and travel to Bora Bora. Laberge and his wife also planned early retirement.
Bouchard Pharand said she wanted to give most of her winnings to her three children and retain a smaller portion. These were initial intentions expressed during an extraordinary day, not binding financial plans.
Why documentation matters
Informal lottery pools can produce disputes when participants cannot prove who paid before a draw. A retailer-administered group product provides a clearer record of each share, though holders should still sign and secure their own ticket or receipt.
